Hello, Ann. How are you?

I'm sensational. How are you?

I'm all right, but I just can't help but feel sorry for the new girl in our office. Have you had a chance to meet her?

Yes, I have met her. Her name is Sandy and she seems very nice . Why did you feel sorry for her?

I feel sorry for her because I don't think she is going to fit in well in the office because she is in a wheelchair.

That’s very discriminating. Why do you think she won't fit into our office environment just because she is in a wheelchair? We all deserve employment equality.

Have you not seen her? Hello Ann she can barely move around the office? She just gets in everybody's way. She will create issues for us in the office.

That is not a very nice thing to say. There are plenty of people in the office who are willing to accommodate Sandy and her wheelchair.

That's my point. She cannot move around the narrow aisles around the cubicles. She slows everyone down.

Well, that is a problem with office management, not her problem. Perhaps we should speak with someone and they can make some changes. We've been talking about rearranging the office for months, and perhaps now is the time to make the office friendlier towards people with disabilities.

What would the advantage of that be?

Well. First, our employees will be happier because they will know that everyone is being treated equally. Secondly, our business will look good to the community because we are an inclusive environment. And lastly, and more importantly, Sandy will feel good working here because she knows she is being recognized.

I don't see your points clearly. I have a lot of work to get done. I'll talk to you later.

A few days later

Ann You were right. Sandy is a very nice person.

You see? Even people with disabilities can make a positive contribution.

Yes, I see now. I spoke to her to see what we can do to make her life easier in the office. I was surprised that we didn't need a lot done to the office. Her only request for that we make the aisle a bit wider and the table height adjustable. I'm having a meeting with the manager to discuss the modifications.

I'm glad I was able to persuade you to see my point. At least we were able to find a reasonable accommodation for her.

Reasonable accommodation?

It is an attempt by employers to adjust the working conditions of employees with disabilities to their preferences.

Well, you're very by the book.

I am just enthusiastic about human rights. It is not good for employers to assume that everyone will fit into the same work environment. We are all different and have different needs. That is what makes us who we are.

So how do you expect our employers to make these changes for Sandy?

Ideally, they will get together and have a meeting. By law, they have to make the working environment safe for her and give her equal opportunity for employment. They can't give her a lower paying job just because she is in a wheelchair.

I see. So after this meeting, what will they do?

If they have a plan, they will work towards implementing it. This depends on how well they've planned out the changes and how much funds that they have available .

Since they were already planning on renovating the office, I don't see that there’s a problem.

I hope you are right.

Several weeks later

Kelly, don't you love the new office?

I sure do. I have a cubicle by the window. And there is a plant near me.

I wish I had a plant.

I will buy you one. Anyways, are you looking forward to the good news I was going to tell you?

You mean your new location was not the good news?

No. It's Sandy. Yes, they were able to put her new adjustable desk into the budget as well. They planned the layout of the office, so she can get around easier. Also, the new lower cabinets are nice. I think everyone appreciates them.

I am sure they do. I have also noticed something about Sandy.

Oh, what is that?

She is fitting in quite well. And I see that everyone likes her.

I have noticed that too.

Do you see, Kelly? You were wrong about her.

Yes, I see that just because she is in a wheelchair, it does not mean that she is better or worse than the rest of us. I was wrong to think she would not fit in.

I am glad that you have changed your mind.

I am too. Thank you for showing me a better solution than discrimination.

You’ll opened up right away. Sandy and I are heading out to lunch. Would you like to come with us?

Sure. I would love to.

Come on then she is waiting for us.
