Argentina Woman Inspires As a Teacher

As a child, Noelia Garella was once rejected from a preschool and called a monster. Now 31, she's in a class of her own.

Noelia is the first and only person with Down syndrome to work as a teacher in Argentina. And one of the few in the world.

What I like the most about being a teacher is the beauty of the children's hearts.

Down syndrome typically affects a person's physical and intellectual growth. But Noelia didn't want her genetic condition to define her.

The young woman studied to become an early childhood educator and started working in 2012. But she faced prejudice, with many doubting her abilities.

Alejandra Senestrari Noelia's first employer:It was a big challenge. It wasn't easy. There were people in positions of responsibility who were convinced that it wasn't possible for a teacher with Down syndrome to actually teach.

Noelia has come a long way in the past four years. She started off teaching in an early literacy program. Now she's in charge of a class of one-year-olds with another instructor.

Father of a pupil of Noelia's :We were told that a teacher with Down syndrome would start teaching and that we shouldn't get scared. But I thought it was normal. I thought it was a very good idea for her to engage with the kids.

Today, Noelia tears up when she remembers the preschool director who called her a monster. She says that person sounds like an evil character from the stories she reads to her class.

Noelia:Now I'm the happy monster and she's the sad monster.

With her determination and drive, Noelia has opened minds and hearts.
