Father and Son

Due to an umbilical cord complication at birth, Rick Hoyt suffered from spastic cerebral paralysis resulting in stiff hands and feet. But for the past 37 years, Rick has accomplished some amazing feats with the help of his father, Dick Hoyt, and a specially made wheelchair. Now 52 years old, Rick has participated in over 60 marathons, 230 triathlons, and more than one thousand long distance races along with his 74 year old father. Among all of these accomplishments, the most important one is the trust and encouragement built up between father and son.


Match-Maker

At a Stoke, Staffordshire, UK guide dog training course, Venice, Claire Johnson’s pet dog, started playing with Rhode, Mark Gaffey’s guide dog. This was in 2012. The two dogs got along very well. Soon after, their owners, 50 year old Claire and 51 year old Mark found themselves to be inseparable from each other as well. In 2013, on Valentine’s Day, Mark proposed to Claire and they were married soon after.




Teacher

At Cleveland Elementary, a top school in Birmingham, UK, Mize and Ben are classroom robots that help teach autistic students. In the school, one quarter of the students haveautism, so the two robot teachers help with students’ interactions and communication. In comparison with humans, robots are more accessible and easier for autistic children to understand as they have no expressions and no emotional changes. Additionally, the two robots can talk, play games, dance, and even give classes.




Footballer

Like most Brazilians, ten year old Locus loves football. Unfortunately, Locus suffers from motor nerve dysfunction and right hand atrophy, making him wheelchair bound and even incapable of shaking hands with others. But Locus has a special electric wheelchair with a metal frame in the front that allows him to kick a large football. Wanting to share his love of football with other disabled children, Locus and his father recently organized an electric wheelchair football team in Rio.


Champion

Missing his front left arm since birth, Radovic picked up his first table tennis paddle with his right hand at 7 years old. Now 13 years old, Radovic has become a competitive table tennis player for his country, Montenegro. During the last season, he won the championship for the under-13 years old category in the Portugal Open. This year at the World Table Tennis Championships in Tokyo, he was among the youngest contestants. This is just the start of his career. Radovic expects to represent Montenegro in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
